Amazon announced on Thursday that it would hire over 100,000 people in the next year and a half, a huge hiring which proves that the giant e-commerce company is on top of the retailing operations.
According to the company’s officials, the new full-time jobs cover a wide array of positions, including software developers and engineers. It is already known that the software developers have some of the most generous yearly salaries in the country.
Some experts believe that Amazon’s decision was somehow influenced by President Donald Trump who expressed his dissatisfaction towards the companies which opened new plants in other countries or moved jobs outside of the United States.
However, one of the company’s spokespersons didn’t say whether Trump’s angry tweets played any role in Amazon’s hiring plan. Although this company is doing great, other competitors have had some problems over the past several weeks.
For instance, Macy’s will cut around 10,000 jobs by the end of the year because some stores will be closed. Also, 4,000 people working for The Limited lost their jobs as the company had to close every brick-and-mortar store.
Other reputable companies in the retail industry are doing better, but not as good as Amazon. Kohl’s and Target hired the same number of people last year as in 2015. On the other hand, Amazon substantially increased its hiring rate from roughly 100,000 people two years ago to about 120,000 last year.
However, according to the sales results, it is no surprise that Amazon ranks first in the retail industry. More precisely, the company dominates the online area as its sales increased by 11 percent over the past two months.
The only setback was in the brick-and-mortar stores where the mall traffic dropped 12.3 percent, whereas the sales declined 9.9 percent. The United States workforce of Amazon increased tremendously from around 30,000 employees in 2011 to roughly 180,000 last year.
Based on the company’s announcement, the majority of the new positions will be in New Jersey, Florida, California, and Texas. New warehouses are being built there. The new employees will have to pack every online order in these warehouses.
It is worth mentioning that Amazon’s workforce is still substantially smaller than Walmart’s. This company has over 1.5 million employees in the United States.
