Recent research suggests that wearables, such as Fitbit trackers and Apple smartwatches, are not so widely popular among customers in the US. Worse, many of those who purchased these devices don’t use them.
According to this year’s statistics, roughly 39.5 million Americans used a wearable device equipped with internet connectivity minimum once every month. However, the initial prediction was that 63.7 million would use those devices.
In other words, the wearable usage across the country increased by just 24,7 percent this year compared to the previous estimates of 60 percent. According to Cathy Boyle, an eMarketer analyst, fitness trackers used to dominate the wearables market before the release of Apple Watch.
Also, the surveys have revealed that customers bought those devices to track their fitness performance and health. It is worth mentioning that eMarketer is a research firm which conducted the latest survey on the wearable usage throughout the United States.
These customers were also sensitive to high prices. Boyle explains that customers didn’t find a clear use case for the new smartwatches, although they were equipped with more high-tech features than conventional fitness trackers.
Plus, these wearables cannot replace smartphones. As such, they didn’t become as popular as most manufacturers thought. The survey suggests that approximately 20.1 million smartwatches will have been shipped by the end of this year, which means an increase of just 3.9 percent since 2015.
Last year, 19.4 million smartwatches were shipped to customers across the country. Even if smartwatches are not doing so well, fitness trackers consisted of 85 percent of the market over the past few months.
The analysts add that wearables are more popular among younger people, as 30 percent of the users with ages between eighteen and 34 are expected to purchase these devices next year. It would mean a 17.6 percent increase compared to this year.
They underline that the majority of young adults will choose fitness trackers over smartwatches. However, things don’t look good even for Fitbit although it has recently purchased Pebble, which was its rival. Plus, many other reputable companies didn’t have such a profitable year.
On the other hand, Tim Cook, Apple CEO, announced that Apple Watch had the best week of sales ever recorded. Still, he didn’t want to say how much profit the device brought to the company since its release.
