On Wednesday, a matte white Himalaya Niloticus crocodile diamond Birkin 30 handbag was sold in Hong Kong for over $377,000. It set a new record and made it the most expensive handbag ever sold at an auction. According to Christie’s, the Hermes bag is encrusted in 18 karat white gold and diamonds and an unknown buyer acquired it after 15 minutes of bidding. It seems like the Birkin 30 bags have something special. Just last year, Christie’s sold a similar one, also in Hong Kong for $300,000. At the time, it was also a record.
A record-breaking handbag
It’s interesting to note that the two handbags look almost identical. The only difference between them, which also resulted in the higher price of the second one, is that the diamonds on the Wednesday bag are of higher grade. Also, this one has more gold on it. Luxury enthusiast know that the Birkin bags are usually extremely exclusive assets. Only A-list celebrities and extremely rich people own them. Christie’s said that Hermes only makes one or two such Diamond Himalaya bags each year. However, the company preferred to not disclose this detail.
It’s also interesting to note that, according to Christie’s, even if someone has that huge amount of money for a Birkin bag, they would have to wait six years for one. The auction house has the waiting list and the potential buyers are some of the richest people in the world. Style icon Jane Birkin is the one who inspired the first such bag of the product line. This happened about 30 years ago.
For the rich and the connoisseurs
Jane Birkin is now 7-years old. Interestingly enough, during an interview with BBC, she said that she doesn’t really use the bag with her name too often. This happens mainly because she usually fills it up with too many things and it becomes too heavy. So, she ends up not being able to carry it around. Back in 2015, the style icon asked Hermes to remove her name from the bags. The reason for her request was that she does not agree with the cruelty involving the killing of crocodiles. Hermes makes this specific Birkin bags exclusively from crocodile skin. However, they settled the situation and the bags still carry her name.
